Hope to see you all at next exhibition very soon.
ARIGATO***
Hi everyone!
Thanks very much for coming to the opening party!
Arigato!
I just display some snaps - from the performance "Ink on stone" at the party.
The character on the stone is " KIZUNA "
means a spiritual connection between people, nature and cosmos.
The stone was so rough and organic!!
It was not easy to do any calligraphy on such a surface.
So I did have to controll the brush with special angles very slowly
so the ink would not drop too much.
And I must say I enjoyed so much such an intense flow of pure concentration!
The result was amazing. The rough surface creates such an interesting deep effect.
I could not help feeling the energy of the stone as well as the audience during the performance.

It is already next Friday!! Amazing how fast February goes!
Yes, you are all invited to the opening party of my new exhibition " INK IN ART "
Please pop by and get inspired!
I am showing my new calligraphy works as a guest artist.

FUDE OKI
BRUSH HOLDER
Quite often in porzelain or ceramic and sometimes in wood and iron too.
I made this green one by myself - so a several brushes can rest!
It can be said poetically as FUDE MAKURA - brush pillow.
Today I was invited to give a KAKIZOME workshop with Japanese children groups in Freiburg.
One group was with very small kids ( 2-4 years old)
and another group with 5 to 9 years old.
They are either Japanese or Japanese mixed kids.
And most of them are bilingual.
As it is the year of the Dragon,
we did the Kakizome with Dragon "TATSU"
And I made an easy SUMIE of a sea dragon for small group.
The Kanji TATSU is not easy at all, specially the strong KADO ( corner) technique and
the dynamic HANE( jumping) technique.
The kids all showed good concentration and did practice very well!!

Small children group between 2 and 4 years old
painting an easy Sumie ink painting * sea dragon *
They used the water color and painting brush.
They had so much fun!

Just finished 26 pieces of ordered calligraphy.
They will be given to students as special certificate in MBSR school.
Yes, I put my right mindfulness into each one of them.
Each "NEN" here is an individual piece of art.

I could not find a nice inspiring calligraphy or Zen word calender this year.
So I just made one for myself!
I picked my favoutite characters that somehow related to the month in my mind,
and wrote old Japanese names for 12 month.
1, MUTSUKI ( Sprouting Month )
2, KISARAGI ( Clothes-lining Month )
3, YAYOI ( Ever-groeing Month )
4, UZUKI ( U no hana Month )
5, SATSUKI ( Rice -sprouting Month )
6, MINAZUKI ( Watery Month )
7, FUMIZUKI ( Poem-composing Month )
8, HAZUKI ( Leaf Month )
9, NAGAZUKI ( Long Month )
10, KANNAZUKI (God-absent Month )
11, SHIMOTSUKI ( Frost Month )
12, SHIWASU ( End of the year )
( * 1 as January to 12 as December)

It is very simple - but nicely unique and personal!
Hope I will have a wonderful year ahead!

I WISH YOU
A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR 2012!!
Enjoy the year of the Dragon!

SUZURI 硯 Inkstone
SUZURI is an inkstone :
One makes ink by rubbing a ink stick on the surface.
This flat surface where the ink is ground slopes into the reservoir for the ground ink. One can also pour liquid ink.
There is various sizes and forms.
For SHODO practice, the size of 12-15cm x 5-7cm would be a good size.
One should always wash with running water and dry with paper or cloth after the practice.
The SUZURI is sculpted from the slate of ancient quarries or riverbeds.
SUZURI artisans look for slate with a rich luster, close grain, natural pattern,
and a smooth, hard impermeable surface.
A fine quality SUZURI can be inherited over 100, 1000 years.
Sometimes carved animals, plants, and natural scenes harmonize
with the natural shape of the inkstone.

UNSUI is a Zen word means being free and natural.
In fact it originally discribes free and natural spirit of travelling young monk
who lerned and meditated very hard in the monastry for a long
and just began to practise the teachings and to experience outside world.
How can they apply the teachings to reality?!
Let us be free and be natural just like those flowing clouds and water...

My first sense of smell as a child was my grandmother's Sumi ink and her Tatami room.
I started practicing SHODO, the art of Japanese calligraphy at the age of five under the supervision of
my grandmother who was a GAYU school calligrapher.
I can not really tell how I learned SHODO as a little girl-
but my body does surely remember everything my grandmother showed and taught me!
The more I continue to practice, the more I realize how important this foundation has been for me.
I am very grateful that I happened to learn such a unique skill of art at young age.
It did teach me not only craftsmanship but also sensitivity and aesthetics for art and also mindfulness.
Naturally, like many other Do-arts, Shodo is an art that one never stops learning-
I quite often see that calligraphy is a mirror of mind- reflection of our state of mind.
Everyday, every time, and every moment your calligraphy shows what you are!
Always different, improving - never the same nor boring.
Doing calligraphy is like each time discovering oneself.
That is why I enjoy practicing and also teaching calligraphy.

I did the benefit calligraphy on Kodomonohi
( spring children's day ) this month.
And I made specially designed name-calligraphy for many people.
I would like to note that
I donated around 50 euro to the SAVE THE CHILDREN Japan.
The money will be used for mental care & support of children
who lost families in damaged area in TOHOKU.
I thank you very much for your compassion and empathy.

that go to the heart, healing, pleasing to people -
: to speaks words worth treasuring, seasonable, reasonable,

It is really hard to do calligraphy in the loud and messy place.
You need to relax both your mind and body.
So firstly find the quiet corner and create a clear space in the room.
Tidy up the table/ desk, make sure there is enough space for your arms to move.
Also it is better when you have no time pressure.
Wether you sit on the floor or at the table, you shoud feel comfortable.
That is the start!

SHOUNEN
This work was done for the last exhibition in Freiburg, Germany.
The Zen word called SHONEN ( right mindfulness ), one of the noble eight fold paths.
The right mindfulnss is the balanced focus on
body, feelings, mind and mental qualities - both * in and of * four elements.
SHOUNEN could be one of the most positive energy indeed we can practice and develop.
I find this word has a deep connection with SHODO.

AN ENSO OF NEN
A RING OF MINDFULNESS
Just finished 21 NEN Calligraphiy works
which was ordered by a meditation course organisation.
They will issue the certificate accompanined this original calligraphy means mindfulness
or in German Achtsamkeit. I found it is good unique idea.
I would be pleased if I took a part in the course.
Well- I just counld not resist making an Enso of Nen!!
A ring of Mindfulness.
You might have seen the KISSAKO calligraphy
in Japanese Tea house, Ryokan hotel, shop, tea room, or maybe in a good restaurant.
Specially it is very popular for SADO tea ceremony room.
The philosophy goes also for the person who makes and offers a cup of tea.
It reflects :
Whenever we make a cup of tea
one should just purely focus our body, feeling, mind and spirit on MAKING the tea
and offering it with full-heart to our guests.
- So the tea will taste good, make the guest calm and relaxed or warm,
and make them feel a momnet of joy-
This Zen philosophy became a pure practised hospitality in Japan.
Would you like a cup of tea?!
*
KISSAKO‘ Have a cup of tea ! ’
( Ocha wo Meshiagare )
This Zen word includes the Zen teaching of enriching life.
Whenever we have a sip of tea,
one should just enjoy the taste of sip,
and feel the life - energy and space in mind.

* CHOKUHITSU Oukaku *
- Horizontal direct brushing -
Chokuhitsu means direct brushing.
Oukaku is the horizontal lines
In Shodo, it means that the direction of the line and the direction of the hair of the brush
are on the same move.
It is one of the most important basic lines you will always need to do, and develop and practise further as you move to other styles or techniques.
It is quite often thiner and finer line.
It is easier to control the brush pressure and your energy line.
Here I put three kind of basic CHOKUHITSU horizontal lines:
Practice:
1. Flat
2. Bending upwards
3. Bending downwards
I'd suggest that you practise those 1-2-3 very slowly and carefully.
Each one can be practised in a paper till there is no white space left, 3-4 sheets for each practice.
Always relax your body, loosened your shoulders.
Keep your breathing rhythm.1. Flat
- As you put the brush, try not to create any pressure on the brush.
- The TOME angle is always 45 degree.
- And slowly move only the thickest part of the brush up so the hair direction becomes horizontal.
- The thinest part of the brush does not move from the point where it came in.
- As the brush is on the horizontal line, slowly move to the right.
- Just before you stop the brush, try to move back the brush to the 45 degree angle.
- the balance line and energy line stays in the middle. see the second picture in 1.
- As you get used to those movement, try to breathe in as you put the brush in.
And slowly breathe out as you move the brush.
- Brush in and breathe in should be always synchronized.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
3. Bending upwards
- As you put the brush, try not to create any pressure on the brush.
- The TOME angle is always 45 degree.
- And slowly move only the thickest part of the brush up so the hair direction becomes horizontal.
- The thinest part of the brush does not move from the point where it came in.
- As the brush is changing into on the horizontal line, put your energy line into only the upwards like in the picture 2 and slowly move to the highest point in the middle, and then slightly go down to the right.
- Try to create a soft bending effect.
- Just before you stop the brush, try to move back the brush to the 45 degree angle.
- the balance line and energy line stays in the middle. see the picture in 2.
- As you get used to those movement, try to breathe in as you put the brush in.
And slowly breathe out as you move the brush.
- * Brush in * and * breathe in * should be always synchronized.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
2. Bending downwards
- As you put the brush, try not to create any pressure on the brush.
- The TOME angle is always 45 degree.
- And slowly move only the thickest part of the brush up so the hair direction becomes horizontal.
- The thinest part of the brush does not move from the point where it came in.
- As the brush is changing into on the horizontal line, put your energy line into only the downwards like in the picture and slowly move to the lowest point in the middle, and then slightly go up to the right.
- Try to create a soft bending effect.
- Just before you stop the brush, try to move back the brush to the 45 degree angle.
- the balance line and energy line stays in the middle. see the picture in 3.
- As you get used to those movement, try to breathe in as you put the brush in.
And slowly breathe out as you move the brush.
- * Brush in * and * breathe in * should be always synchronized.
*
Try to move the brush as gentle and slow as possible specially as you change the direction from the TOME angle 45 degree to the horizontal line.
- Same required as you move back to the TOME angle at the end.
If you manage to have calm meditative state,
the energy and brush movement become also balaneced.
It is like the mirror of your KOKORO state!
Be paicient little longer and have fun!
